Vistas a Las Playas

 Las Playas is situated in the southeast of El Hierro. Through a landslide this semicircular bay was created, which is part of the Canary Islands Network of Protected Areas. First thing you see when driving to this protected area is the Roque de La Bonanza, a stone formation with a total hight of 200m, 20m of which over water. It's peculiar form has become a characteristic image of the island. This stone formation can be seen in my first painting. On the other side of the bay is the Parador, a hotel situated just on the shore with spectacular views over the bay. The massive cliff behind the Hotel shows the different layers of lava and basalt, visible to the bare eye thanks to the erosion. You can appreciate this in my second painting.

My two paintings of Las Playas were painted in pastel and mixed technique, mixing pastel with aquarela and other types of colours.

La zona de Las Playas se encuentra al sureste de la Isla de El Hierro. Un deslizamiento gigante ha producido esta bahía semicircular. Al acceder a Las Playas primeramente se puede apreciar el Roque de La Bonanza, una formación rocosa en medio del atlántico que se ha convertido en imagen característica de El Hierro. Éste roque se puede apreciar en mi primer cuadro. Al otro extremo de la baía, a la orilla del mar, se encuentra el Parador Nacional de Turismo de El Hierro. Las Playas pertenece a la Red Canaria de Espacios Naturales Protegidos y pesenta un paisaje espectacular con una muy variada flora y fauna. También se ven los diques, formados por una lava que se ha ido enfirando lentamente mientras ascendía y formando capas de basalto. A la hora de erosionarse, ponen al descubierto las diferentes capas de lava y especiales formas de acantilado visibles en mi segundo cuadro.

Mis dos pinturas de Las Playas las he pintado con pastel y técnica mixta, mezclando pastel con acuarelas y otros tipos de pintura.

Plein air painting

On my last excursion to Charco Azul on El Hierro, Canary Islands, as so often, I let the landscape inspire me. Plein air painting is my best source of inspiration, it is about letting the surrounding, the smell, the wind, the essence of nature take over your senses and depict it on a canvas. Often I start paintings out in nature, mostly it is aquarella, pastel or oilpaintings, and then I finish them in my atelier. Here you can see the evolution of my Charco Azul painting. 

En mi última excursión al Charco Azul en El Hierro, Islas Canarias, como tantas otras veces he dejado que me inspire el paisaje. Pintar al aire libre es la mejor manera de inspirarse. Se trata de dejar que el entorno, los olores, el viento y la esencia de la naturaleza tome posesión de tus sentidos y plasmarlo todo en un lienzo. A menudo empiezo mis cuadros en la naturaleza, son sobre todo aquarelas, cuadros en pastel u óleo, que luego termino en mi taller. Aquí podéis ver la evolución de mi cuadro del Charco Azul.

Under the bark of a pine

Today I bring you two of my latest pinetree paintings in oil. The pinus canariensis, the Canary Island pine, is an evergreen tree with a very special property: it is fire resistant and regenerates after a bushfire. In my paintings I have the big "dancing pinetree" and a smaller detail of a pine. The big pinetrees can be found every now and then in the forest, and they are responsible for the perpetuation of the pines. As can be seen in my painting, forests on the Canary Islands show individual big pines with often black bark from bushfires surrounded by small pines. As a frame for these oilpaintings I have used the bark of the pine with black carbonised leftovers from the fires.
You can see these two paintings now exhibited in CIT Tigaday until end of May 2017.

Hoy os traigo dos de mis últimas pinturas del pino canario pintado en óleo. El pinus canariensis, pino canario, es un árbol de hoja perenne con una propiedad muy especial: es resistente al fuego y se regenera después de un incendio forestal. Hoy os quiero presentar dos pinturas: "el pino bailarín" y un detalle más pequeño de un pino visto desde abajo. Los pinos grandes, como se puede apreciar en "el pino bailarín", se pueden encontrar dispersos por el bosque y son responsables de la perpetuación del pinar. Como se puede ver en mi pintura, los bosques de las Islas Canarias tienen pinos muy grandes entre los más pequeños con la corteza negra de incendios forestales. El marco de estos dos cuadros en óleo es un tanto especial, es la corteza del pino con restos carbonizados de los incendios.

A break under the pinetrees

Curious birds draw nearer and the forest creatures dare to come out of their hiding place within the cortex of the trees. The light in the cristal pine needles casts a spell over the senses. I meld into the magical dance.

Rast unter der Pinie. Vögle nähern sich neugierig und ohne Scheu wagen sich Waldwesen aus ihrer dicken Rinde. Licht in den gläsernen Nadeln verzaubern die Sinne. Ich verschmelze im magischen Tanz. 

Spring flowers in wax

 

Spring and colourful flowers are invading my surrounding. Everywhere I look flowers are blossoming and nature seems to be screaming of joy. Through my artistic eye I pictured this natural wonder in this wax painting. If you look closely enough fantasy treasures will reveal, hidden for you to be discovered.
